IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED THE CIF IOSH MSIC PROGRAM YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE THE NEW COURSE, BUT YOU MUST UPDATE YOUR CIF VERIFCIATION OF COMPETENCY CARD EVERY THREE YEARS. 

The course covers issues that would be seen as key for the safety management of people on site.

Topics covered are as follows;

  1. Health and Safety Legislation. (Including Course Assignment brief)
  2. Accident Investigation & Insurance Claims.
  3. Risk Assessment & Hazard Identification including Method Statements.
  4. Fire & Electrical Safety in Construction.
  5. Work at Heights systems & prevention of falls.
  6. Scaffolding and hazard spotting.
  7. Excavations, Roadworks and Confined Spaces.
  8. Plant & Machinery in Construction.
  9. Occupational Health Construction.

The CIF IOSH Managing Safely in Construction will be as of January 2022 been rebranded under new licensing arrangement with IOSH as the CIF IOSH Safety for Construction Manager Programme.

This tailored programme is specifically designed and built by the Construction Industry Federations Learning & Development Department for the Irish Construction sector and was the first of its kind in Ireland. The CIF IOSH Safety for Construction Manager Program covers critical safety issues that would be seen as key for people going on site.

The CIF IOSH Safety for Construction Manager Programme provides a strong core safety content over five days. The course is delivered in one day per week over a five week period by our experienced panel of tutors. Each day comprises two half day modules.

CIF IOSH Safety for Construction Manager Programme is certified by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) – providing an international accreditation. It is also recognised throughout the industry as being the foundation programme for safety supervision and management on construction projects in Ireland.

IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED THE CIF IOSH MSIC PROGRAM YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE THE NEW COURSE, BUT YOU MUST UPDATE YOUR CIF VERIFCIATION OF COMPETENCY CARD EVERY THREE YEARS. 

On day 5, attendees will have to complete an Online Exam comprising of both multiple choice and short answers questions.  The duration of the exam is 1 hour and 45 minutes.

On successful completion candidates will be awarded:

  • CIF IOSH Safety for Construction Managers Programme Certificate
  • CIF SCMP Verification of Competency Safety Card [Renewed every 3 years via online renewal]
  • 30 CPD Points

Exam re-sits will incur a fee of €75.00.

The CIF IOSH Safety for Construction Manager Programme is held over five days, one day a week over five weeks. Daily start time is 09.30 am to 16.30 pm.The CIF IOSH Safety for Construction Manager Programme – Fast Track course is held on five days over the course of three weeks. Daily start is 09.30 am to 16.30 pm.

The CIF can deliver this programme in house and may be tailored to your companies requirements.In terms of programme delivery, the CIF can facilitate learning by virtual means (online via Zoom), or in classroom format (at your premises), subject to criteria.   • 5 working days’ notice or less will incur a 100% cancellation fee. A ‘no show’ on the day also incurs a 100% cancellation fee.

Module 1: Health and Safety Legislation. (Including Course Assignment brief)
  • The aim is introduce the delegates to Irish health and safety legislation in the context of workplaces and to facilitate an understanding of the respective roles and responsibilities for all involved in the construction sector.
  • On completion delegates will be able to apply their knowledge of the Irish legislative system to their daily tasks on site; they will understand the three key reasons for managing safely (moral, legal and financial) and the responsibility and accountability of managers of workplace safety.
Module 2: Accident Investigation & Insurance Claims
  • The aim is to provide delegates with an understanding of the means to evaluate, and to strategically respond to, an incident.
  • On completion delegates will be able to apply their learnings to effectively investigate incidents and accidents.
Module 3: Risk Assessment & Hazard Identification including Method Statements
  • The aim is to provide delegates with an understanding of risk assessment methodologies and the means for identifying and managing workplace hazards and associated risks.
  • On completion delegates will understand the key terms associated with risk assessment will be explained to delegates, to enable practical and theoretical demonstration of hazard identification, assessment, and determination of appropriate control measures.
Module 4: Fire & Electrical Safety in Construction.
  • The aim is to ensure delegates possess an understanding of the best means for preventing fire occurrence, for safeguarding persons from fire and electrical hazards and for assessing safe work plans.
  • On completion delegates will be able to effectively plan and oversee work mindful of the potential fire and electrical hazards, considering contingency planning.
Module 5: Working at Height
  • The aim is to provide delegates with a high-level understanding of the hazards and risks associated with working at height.
  • On completion delegates will be able to apply their knowledge gained to effectively plan safe working at height considering the most appropriate mobile access equipment.
Module 6: Scaffolding & Hazard Spotting
  • The aim is to provide delegates with an overview of current scaffolding and working platform systems, including key safety considerations and legislative requirements.
  • On completion delegates will be able to apply their learnings when selecting and/or inspecting scaffolding and working platform systems, to ensure the safety of workers.
Module 7: Underground Services, Excavations, Confined Spaces & Road Issues
  • The aim is to provide an overview of the potential hazards, associated risks, control measures, and inspection requirements presented by work involving underground services, excavations, confined space, and roads.
  • On completion delegates will understand how to identify live services and be able to implement protective measures for safe working in underground services, excavations, confined space and on roads.
Module 8: Plant, Machinery & Equipment in Construction
  • The aim is to provide delegates with an understanding of the underpinning legislation for the safe operation of plant, machinery and equipment and for recognition of the hazards and associated risks associated with heavy mobile equipment and tools predominantly found on construction sites in Ireland.
  • On completion delegates will be able to apply their knowledge of best practice measures to protect workers from the risks associated with vehicles, mobile equipment and tools typically found on construction sites.
Module 9: Occupational Health in Construction
  • The aim is provide delegates with an understanding of the potential ill effects of human exposure to chemical, biological and ergonomic hazards and the means for managing the associated risks in the context of construction.
  • On completion delegates will be able to apply their learnings in terms of recognising occupational health considerations and implementing appropriate control measures to ensure the safety, health and wellbeing of all persons in the workplace.
Module 10: Exam
  • The IOSH SCMP Exam consists of a 50 short question paper. Delegates will have 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete the paper.
