The 2-day CIF Environmental Management for Construction Programme is accredited with City & Guilds Assured and has been designed to focus on four key thematic areas of land, waste, water and pollution prevention. The programme incorporates workshops to provide practical tools and advice for construction site management.

The workshops will enable participants to develop a Resource and Waste Management Plan (RWMP), a Land Management Plan and a Water Management Plan tailored for the construction sector. Furthermore, the outcomes from the workshops will be transposed into an overall Project Environmental Management Plan for utilisation by course graduates.

The course is intended to meet the needs of personnel with responsibility for pollution prevention and effective waste management on construction sites.  The course should assist construction site management to understand and comply with legal obligations and implement best practice with respect to environmental management.

In December 2021, the Environmental Protection Agency published the ‘Best Practice Guidelines for the Preparation of Resource & Waste Management Plans (RWMP) for C&D Projects’. The Guidelines include a recommendation that “planning authorities stipulate that an RWMP shall be submitted for all construction and demolition projects as best practice to inform the planning consent process”. All participants on the CIF/City & Guilds Assured’ Environmental Management in Construction programme receive template RWMPs for Tier 1 and Tier 2 developments.

Having completed the programme, each participant should:

  • Recognise the most prevalent environmental issues facing the construction sector;
  • Possess the tools necessary to effectively manage environmental considerations onsite;
  • Understand the most pertinent environmental legislation for construction;
  • Be able to classify waste and ensure proper segregation and handling;
  • Know how to develop a site Resource and Waste Management Plan (RWMP);
  • Understand the requirements for waste collection and for record-keeping;
  • Appreciate the principles of the circular economy;
  • Know how to undertake a pre-construction environmental site assessment to determine baseline levels, and to identify any constraints for development works;
  • Be able to develop a land management plan;
  • Understand the requirements for handling excess soil and stone;
  • Understand the limitations and licensing arrangements for use and disposal of waters;
  • Be able to develop a water management plan;
  • Understand the welfare requirements for provision of a safe and reliable water supply;
  • Utilise the general hierarchy of controls to prevent pollution;
  • Know the requirements for correct storage and handling of hazardous materials;
  • Be able to manage and adequately clean-up spills;
  • Recognise best practice with regards to control of noise and dust generation;
  • Understand the demands of industry as we move towards a low carbon economy;
