The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, states that the employer or owner, as the ‘responsible’ person, has overall responsibility for fire safety in their premises. However, they may appoint ‘competent’ persons such as Fire Wardens to help ensure adequate fire safety procedures are used and adhered to.

Fire is one of the most devastating hazards in the workplace. Most fires are preventable. Those responsible for workplaces and public buildings, can avoid fire by taking responsibility for the right behaviour and procedures.

This Fire Wardens eLearning course describes how fires start. By explaining the Fire Triangle, users will learn about the three elements (heat, oxygen and fuel) needed for a fire to start and spread. A fire spreads in three different ways: convection, conduction and radiation.

The course emphasises that Fire Wardens should be responsible individuals who are required to carry out suitable fire risk assessments. Users will also understand that risk assessments should identify all fire hazards and risks on the premises. These include potential sources of ignition and fuel, and the people at risk.  In addition, warning and detection systems in place, means of escape, and fire fighting equipment. Furthermore, Fire Wardens Assist in an orderly and prompt evacuation to assembly points during an emergency.

The role of Incidents Control Officers is explained in the course. These individuals take charge in an emergency situation. First aid representatives assist in the treatment of injuries or illness during an emergency whilst waiting for the Emergency Services to arrive. This course also explains that Fire safety management cannot be successful unless individuals have an understanding of how fires start, the common causes of fires and what to do during a fire emergency. All employees should have an understanding of fire safety.
