This innovative CIF 2 day course is designed to provide those on site who have responsibility for supervising temporary works with the essential knowledge to deliver on this often contentious area of construction activity. It is also suitable for builders and specialist contractors, utilities, civil engineering contractors, supervisors, graduates and site engineers wishing to begin the educational journey to become competent Temporary Works Co-Ordinators.

The course is based on Section 2 Procedural control of temporary works of BS 5975:2019 and includes one day tutor lead legislative guidance and a second day of workshop providing the essential practical aspect of Temporary Works Co ordination. Detailed, well-designed course hand-outs are issued – but the program does not involve structural calculations.

The programme will not make the learner competent unless they have previous knowledge, experience and training but will serve to provide essential information in achieving the right information on your educational journey.

This is a two day programme delivered over two consecutive days.

Full attendance of the 2 day course is required. There is an examination at the end of the course which consists of 20 questions all of which is based upon the course content delivered over the two day, this is a closed book examination

  • To clarify what constitutes ‘Temporary Works’ and familiarise delegates with Newly released BS 5975:2019 Code of Practice for temporary work procedures & the permissible stress design of falsework and the tools available to help with the process.
  • To allow delegates to appreciate the statutory requirements and Safety & Health roles and responsibilities relating to Temporary Works.
  • The course gives emphasis throughout to the importance of communication, co-ordination and competency and risk management.
  • To assist the Temporary Works Designers by providing the correct amount of information and sufficient time to carry out the design.
  • To be part of the company’s overall requirement for appointing competent Temporary Works Co-Ordinators/Supervisors, who can supervise/implement the Temporary Works procedure.
  • To impart basic engineering knowledge, specifically relating to construction activities.
  • To highlight common site Temporary Works risks and problems, so that they can be resolved and dealt with more efficiently.
  • Allow delegates to develop inspection skills on Temporary Works prior to loading.

Day 1

  • Importance of CIF & HSA Temporary Works guidance.
  • Avoiding failure and ensuring appropriate risk management.
  • Temporary Works Procedures to BS5975:2019
  • Discussion to identify and classify temporary works.
  • Discussion on managing designs carried out by subcontractors or equipment suppliers.
  • Discussion on preparing a design brief and design checking.
  • Setting up site and public protection(Hoarding).

Day 2

  • Risk identification and management tutorial.
  • Discussion on preparing a temporary works register and sequencing temporary works.
  • Course summary, sources of further help and information and questions
  • Course examination and administration

Attendees will have to complete an Online Exam comprising in short answer format.  The duration of the exam is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

On successful completion candidates will be awarded:

  • CIF City & Guilds Safety Temporary Works Coordinator Certificate
  • 14 CPD Points

Exam re-sits will incur a fee of €75.00.

  • 5 working days’ notice or less will incur a 100% cancellation fee. A ‘no show’ on the day also incurs a 100% cancellation fee.
