Microsoft Power BI enables users to unlock the potential of their data, to streamline the production of reports and to make information more meaningful through visualisation.

During this course, you will create and format simple but meaningful reports and visualisations.
The course will cover what you need to know to get started with Power BI Desktop. Over the 2 days you will learn about the three key components of Power BI Desktop:

  • Power Query aka as Get & Transform
  • Data Visualisation
  • Data Model

Audience

  • Users who wish to understand how Power BI Desktop can help them in their management information reporting and visualisation tasks.
  • Users who are likely to work with data on a frequent basis. Ideally advanced Excel users who are comfortable with Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP & creating formulas such as IF statements and perhaps even have created some Macro’s.

Course Outline

Automate Data Preparation (Day 1)
By using Power Query, you will learn how to transform and clean your data once, and then let Power BI automate your process after that, leaving you free to focus on the analysis.

Get Data
In this section you will learn how to get data from various sources, such as:

  • Excel
  • CSV/Text file
  • SQL Database
  • Public Website
  • Manually entered data

Transform
In this section you will learn how to use Power Query to get your data into the perfect shape for you to use in the Power BI Data Model.

  • Learn about data types & why they matter
  • Column from examples (It is amazing what this feature can do for you!)
  • Tidy bad formatting
  • Handle errors in source data
  • Conditional Logic – using the built-in tools
  • Merge is about joining data together (Like VLOOKUP in Excel or JOINS in SQL)
  • Learn how to summarise your data to the right detail for your needs
  • Learn how to quickly unpivot your data (so easy to do with Power Query)

Data Visualisation (Day 2)
Learn how to explore & see your data by using the various visuals available such as:

  • Table
  • Matrix
  • Column Charts
  • Slicers
  • Cards
  • Maps
  • Combo Charts
  • Visual Formatting
  • Adding company branding

Data Model (Day 2)
In this section you will cover the fundamentals of Data Modelling.

  • Adding simple calculations
  • Formatting measures
  • Creating relationships
  • Hiding unneeded information
  • Create a date table
  • Adding more complex calculations that introduce you to the power of DAX

By the end of the course you will leave equipped to start using Power BI desktop in the real world and with practice, you will transform the way you manage your data.
