Training Course Information

This Health & Safety Representation Course is offered by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions in cooperation with CIF, the Construction Industry Federation. The course is specifically designed for the construction sector
and is aimed at employees of CIF member companies. This cooperation between ICTU and CIF is part of a series of initiatives to mark Construction Safety Week. This is a high-quality QQI certified
training course lasting five days which normally costs €475.

Companies nominating participants can benefit from a reduced fee of €225 per person for this course only, with the balance being covered by Congress.

Aim of the Course:
The purpose of this course is to equip the learner with knowledge, skill and competence to
enable the learner to promote and maintain safety and health in the workplace and represent
workers on health and safety issues.

Brief Description:
Learners on completion will:

  • Understand the concepts of the promotion of safety, health and welfare in the workplace
  • Be familiar with the core health and safety legislation especially in construction
  • Describe the role, the rights and the function of the safety representative
  • Understand the duties of employers and the role of the HSA
  • Understand the importance of the safety statement, hazard identification and risk assessment
  • Explain the fire hazards, their sources and the requirement for the fire preventions controls
  • Understand the communication process and effective participation at meetings
  • Outline factors of accident causation, describe prevention strategies and policies

This course is designed for newly-appointed Safety Representatives in the workplace. It will also be appropriate for those already in the role who may not have had adequate training or
for more experienced reps who would benefit from a refresher course.
